Marrow
Power works
with families to publicize the need for people to come forward to sign up as voluntary
marrow donors. Because marrow typing is based on DNA, it is extremely difficult
to find an unrelated marrow match outside a persons immediate family. Even though
more than 4 million people are currently registered on marrow donor registries
worldwide, thousands of people die each year for lack of a genetically compatible,
living marrow donor. As a result, marrow donor drives must be conducted on an
ongoing basis to boost the number of prospective marrow donors who can save anothers
life. Publicity in local and regional newspapers calls attention to upcoming marrow
donor drives, as do interviews on radio and TV. We also help with flyers to be
distributed near the site of a marrow donor drive and e-mailed to interested prospective
donors. Marrow
Power works closely with civic and community
groups, colleges and universities, and houses of worship to help people with leukemia,
lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, myeloma, and other potentially fatal blood cancers.
These groups have hosted and sponsored marrow donor drives, marshaling volunteers
to make these drives extremely successful. Among the organizations teaming up
with Marrow Power have been:
- County
College of Morris, Randolph, NJ
- Centenary
College, Hackettstown, NJ
- Sussex
